For the longest time, the cheapest/best option between Guayaquil, Ecuador and Mancora, Peru had been CIFA's night bus. A double-decker, the seats span 4 across (a bit tight) but with a fair bit of recline in the seat and not bad leg room for anyone under 6 feet tall.
But the bus is aging, the prices escalating, and the options continue to confuse. What confuses most is knowing when the "right" CIFA bus departs. You don't want to find yourself traveling on anything other than the double decker which travels strictly at night (and direct) for speedier travel. The others make constant and random stops to pick up people along the way - often after a hard day's work they holding onto the railing above your seat exposing a worker's armpit within your olfactory range. Worse still, your sleep is interrupted with an overwhelming urge to watch your bag stowed overhead against the potential theiving handsof the many on and off passengers.
The "right" CIFA bus departs at 11.30pm from Guayaquil's fancy new Terminal Terrestre - [ the new terminal is great - it is a launching point to anywhere you want to go in Ecuador - clean, new, and full of shops and restaurants - there is even speedy Wifi (free) on the third floor at the (southern?) end ]. The bus arrives in Mancora around 7.30am. From Mancora, the "right" CIFA bus departs at 9.30pm and arrives at 5.30am to Guayaquil Terminal Terrestre.
It used to be the price from Guayaquil to Mancora was only $11 USD - it is up to $15 now despite little internal maintenance to the bus (don't accept seat number 4 - the back has been broken for nearly a year as of this writing and still yet to be fixed). The price from Mancora to Guayaquil also climbs steadily - originally at 45 soles 2 years ago, the most recent jump is now at 60 soles (too much in my opinion).
But another new service will provide an even better service cheaper. Excluciva (a.k.a. CIVA) has offered great competitive service to Lima from Mancora for many years. Thankfully, for the efficiently-sized impaired (tall/wide people), a second tier service offers highly reclining and wide plush seats. The first floor of the CIVA bus has only 3 seats per row and the seat reclines 165 degrees - easy sleeping for the long ride. All this for the low price of $15 from Guayaquil to Mancora! You can find them in Guayaquil Terminal at office # 55 (in the corner in the north? end). I will report back on prices from Mancora to Guayaquil (likely higher due to gas price differences - in Peru gas is much more expensive)
